News Update: 'Privileged' Cancelled
Sad Sad News: Privilegd Not Returning Next Year
The CW will not be renewing Privileged for a second season. There was talk of a possible midseason berth for the much-loved dramedy, but, ultimately, the show was a casualty of the network's strong development.
"It's truly heartbreaking," series creator Rina Mimoun said via e-mail. "I'm so grateful to everyone out there who supported our little show and
fell in love with Megan Smith. She was the most delightful character I've ever had the pleasure to write and watching
JoAnna Garcia bring her to life every day was a gift I will never forget. I'm incredibly proud of the work we did and
forever indebted to all the fans, critics and to Warner Bros. for being so wonderful and supportive.
I will miss this more than you know." Class act, that one.

News Update: 'Privileged' inching closer to pickup?
Scoop: 'Privileged' inching closer to pickup?
There's new evidence to suggest that The CW may be close to doing the right thing (read: season 2 renewal!) where Privileged is concerned.
A source close to the show confirms that the network has decided to run repeats of the cult fave on Fridays at 8 pm/ET throughout the summer. Why would The CW waste an hour of its schedule on a show that had no future? It's simple: They most likely probably wouldn't.
"It's definitely a positive sign," acknowledges a Privileged insider, who quickly adds that there's still no official word about a pickup. Indeed, a CW rep insists no decision has been made about the show's future.
Still, with this new development coming so closely on the heels of a report that the show may be back as a midseason replacement, momentum has clearly shifted in Privileged's favor.
The promising word of mouth has even trickled down to co-star Sharon Lawrence, who plays mom to Joanna Garcia's Megan. "I heard it may have a life," she told me earlier today, "which is great!"
Anyone else think it's great? I'll go first: I do!

News Update: Privileged Has a Shot
Hollywood Reporter predictions: Reaper done, Privileged has a shot, Dollhouse 50-50…and Chuck
Over at the CW, “Reaper” is gone, while the prospects for “Privileged” have improved, and the show is now considered for a possible midseason order.
If Privileged is ressurected, I predict that will completely change the tenor of Renew or Cancel posts for next year. I kind of hope that it happens so I can do the historical montage (set to “The Way We Were”) of all the ways Bill came up with saying you’ll never see a new Privileged again, ever.

News Update: Finale Serves Up Love, Alcohol and a One-Night Stand
Privileged Finale Serves Up Love, Alcohol and a One-Night Stand
This Tuesday at 9 pm/ET, the CW's Privileged wraps up what one can only hope is but the first of several seasons. But what's the reality? Will the charming series get a Season 2 pick-up? And if so, what's on tap for the super-cute and ultra-quippy Megan? JoAnna Garcia shared with us a sneak peek at what's to come. Plus: Is talk of an on-set romance true?
TVGuide.com: We have come full circle. I moderated a Paley Center panel previewing the first season of Privileged, and now we are here on what we optimists like to think is perhaps the eve of a Season 2 renewal.
JoAnna Garcia: I think we have a really good shot. I think it's going to come down to the future programming that they have on [the CW], and how long they think each show is going to last. I don't think that developmentally speaking, there is a ton going on, so....
TVGuide.com: Well, there is that one pilot about young and fabulous vampires....
Garcia: Yeah, and there's a Melrose [Place reboot].... But I think they really like our show! Obviously, 90210 has been a focus for them, but I believe we've done everything we can. I'm so proud of this season — and what's to come. [Series creator] Rina [Mimoun], being a consummate professional, already has the second season nailed down and is presenting it this week to the studio.
TVGuide.com: Has she shared with you the places Megan will go if there's a pick-up?
Garcia: Yeah, we talk about a lot of that stuff. But I think it's also exciting to see where all the different characters will go in their journeys. Megan will always sort of be the "anchor," but each cast member brings something different to the table with their character. I think Megan's going to stay single for a while, though. I don't think she's going to be all boyfriended up.
TVGuide.com: So sell us and sell us hard on the season finale. What's going down?
Garcia: A lot! It's all about love — the beginnings of love, the end of love.... We shot a jam-packed, huge finale...
TVGuide.com: Like with explosions and helicopter chases?
Garcia: No, but there's a wedding! And there's alcohol involved, and a one-night stand. But really and truly, the future of this show is about Megan's life outside of the mansion, outside of the girls. We've added a new cast member to play an editor, and he's got an amazing storyline. The season finale is going to show you really what the show is about.
TVGuide.com: Let's talk about this new editor, David, and give his portrayer a name — Robert Buckley. If there's a Season 2, is he definitely returning?
Garcia: Yes. As a full-on series regular.
TVGuide.com: Do you see David as being the "Big" to Megan's "Carrie"?
Garcia: You're going to find that David and Megan have a lot in common, but they deal with their pasts in very different ways. I think they'll be soul mates in a way, but there will be a roller-coaster of a journey to get to a place where they can see eye-to-eye and appreciate that.
TVGuide.com: So, no necking in the season finale?
Garcia: Probably not. [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: This talk about you dating Buckley in real life — is that just part of some PR effort to get "buzz" going for Season 2? "Look, our cast members are so hot they can't keep their hands off each other!"
Garcia: Well, I never really thought about it that way! I never comment on my personal life [Garcia and boyfriend Trace Ayala recently ended an eight-month engagement], but Rob's a great guy, and I feel lucky to have him on the show. And his character is going to be really interesting.
TVGuide.com: Well, I interviewed Rob a few weeks ago, and for what it's worth and whatever is going on off the set, you have my blessing.
Garcia: Thank you very much!
TVGuide.com: Were you disappointed yet understanding when Michael Cassidy left the show?
Garcia: I was disappointed. I will say I love Michael and I think he's an extraordinary actor, and I enjoyed working with him. I can't speak for Michael, but I think that in a lot of ways he's a lot bigger than [the character of] Charlie.
TVGuide.com: That's what I said to Rina, that Charlie's purpose almost seemed to be to bide his time until Season 3 or 4, when Megan snaps out of it and comes to her senses.
Garcia: Yeah. The reality of it is Michael Cassidy deserves to have his own vehicle. He's that good.
TVGuide.com: Are you nearly as quirky and quippy as Megan? Do you aspire to be?
Garcia: Um... Megan has a better vocabulary than I do. [Laughs] She's got more of the literary knowledge — she knows authors and books and all that kind of stuff that flies over my head. But other than that, she and I are pretty much one in the same. Except I have a really good family!
TVGuide.com: What are your plans for the hiatus?
Garcia: I've done a little traveling, a little promoting of the season finale.... I'm actively reading scripts and hopefully will do a movie. Since we ended a little bit early, I have some time to fit something in. So keep your fingers crossed! But before I know it, May will be here and we'll have an idea of what's going on with Season 2!

News Update: 'Privileged': Five Reasons to Save the Show
'Privileged': Five Reasons to Save the Show
The CW is giving Privileged a very early season finale on Feb. 24, making us worry for its future. Here's why the freshman critical fave deserves to graduate to a second season.
1. Joanna Garcia
As tutor-to-the-rich Megan Smith (pictured, left), Garcia plays cynical and sunny, pretty and goofy, dark and funny. Think Lorelai and Rory Gilmore in one, with a little Veronica Mars on top.
2. The Gilmore vibe
Nothing can replace the Girls, but Privileged comes close, with heartfelt family stories, endearing side characters (Allan Louis' chef Marco -- pictured, right -- has his own series' worth of drama!), and sparkling banter.
3. The Twins
Megan's wealthy charges, Rose (Lucy Kate Hale) and Sage (Ashley Newbrough), struggle with Paris Hilton urges, date dorks and the help, and might even want to be a little smart.
4. Its Dark Side
Megan's mom, who ditched her when she was a kid, suddenly reappeared. She then stole $25,000 from Megan's boyfriend. Who was planning to use it as bail money for Megan's sister. Who was accused of running drugs.
5. Underrated Actors
Anne Archer as matriarch Laurel, Sharon Lawrence as Megan's mom, and cougar bait Robert Buckley (Lipstick Jungle) as her editor...they've earned their job security!

Privileged Pair a Real-Life Couple
Lipstick Jungle stud Robert Buckley’s recent stint on Privileged may have landed him a new girlfriend.
Life and Style reports that Buckley and Privileged star Joanna Garcia are dating.
“It was pretty late at night, probably 1 a.m., and they were cuddling and kissing. It was very cute; they’re pretty hot together,” a source tells the mag of the couple, who were seen walking into a NYC club together last week.
Joanna, who plays Megan on the hit CW show, caught up with the mag at the BCBG fashion show on Feb. 13 and did confess, “I do have someone special in my life. We actually had a spa day this morning and had a little fun time. We’ve been enjoying our week in New York.”
“I’m flying back to LA tomorrow [Feb. 14th], so I’ll be on an airplane. Maybe we’ll do some Valentine’s Day tryst in the air or something - but not join the mile-high club!”

News Update: Ashley Newbrough on Living the Privileged Life
Ashley Newbrough on Living the Privileged Life
As Sage Baker on the CW's Privileged, Ashley Newbrough plays a snarky ice queen with a good heart buried somewhere deep inside. On tonight's episode, titled "All About Confessions," many of the characters reveal something major they've been hiding — and Sage's secret is one of the biggest of all. Earlier this week, Newbrough hopped on the phone with some reporters to chat about playing Sage, working on Privileged, and getting comfortable with her TV twin. Here are highlights:
- On Sage's big confession: "Sage reveals this secret, the secret that will explain why she's so guarded, and it's a pretty heavy deal, it's something she's been carrying her entire life — well, since she was 6, since her parents died. She's been carrying this secret for so long, and it's the first time she lets it off her shoulders and says it out loud, really. And I think it's good because it lets the audience in on her darkest secret, so it kind of shows you what really damaged her. You get to see the softer side of Sage. She's very, very vulnerable, which is something that never happens."
- On how having a love interest has changed Sage: "It's forced her to sort of be a little bit more sensitive and sort of watch what she says a little bit more . . . especially when it's Luis, because he doesn't put up with her crap, and he doesn't back down from any of her mean remarks or anything like that. It's definitely made her reevaluate what she says and how she treats people. . . Just kind of dealing with the feelings of having a crush on someone has just made her grow up a little bit and accept the fact that she's going to let him in and be a little bit vulnerable with him, which are all things that she's never experienced before, because as she says, she's never liked someone this much."
- On what attracted her to playing Sage: "I felt like you could tell she was damaged, and underneath all that ice and meanness she was a good person somewhere. Being only 16 and having lost her parents when she was 6, I think that all forced her to grow up really fast and sort of made her different than all the other regular mean girls on television shows or in life, because I think she has all these reasons for why she is so mean and guarded and why she hates letting people in so much. . . I also liked how she was so protective of her sister. She can be mean to everyone in the world but as long as Rose is happy, she didn't care."
To find out what she thinks makes Sage likable beneath all the nastiness, what it's like being the taller twin, and what surprised her about working in LA vs. working in Canada, read more.
- On making her mean girl character likable: "Whenever I have these lines where I'm calling people, you know, 'pear-shaped' or 'effeminate' or 'fat and deaf,' I feel so bad, and I always feel the need to go up to the actors and hug them or something, because I feel so mean about it. I think the likability comes from the comedy of it, because I've actually had a lot of people tell me that Sage is the character that says what everyone's thinking but they're too afraid to say it."
- On bonding with her TV twin, Lucy Hale: "The first thing we did was we went out to Pinkberry, because in the pilot they have Pinkberry moments, and I had just moved to LA so I had never had it before. So we had a Pinkberry moment, and then we got pedicures and went shopping and we honestly clicked so well right off the top. I couldn't have asked for a better twin sister costar, because Lucy is awesome. We actually are roommates now. We get along very well, we go shopping all the time, we do a lot together, so it's very easy to play twins on camera."
- On playing the taller twin: "Sometimes they have me not wearing shoes, if I'm off-camera, and then they'll have Lucy wearing her heels, or sometimes they'll build her up a little ramp — it's really cute, it's red, and they've got stars on it, so she gets a little bit of a height boost, and they take off my heels."
- On one big difference between Canadian and US shows: "One thing that's very different is the wardrobe — the wardrobe fittings, not the clothes really . . . In Canada you go in your own separate changing room, and you come out and they assess whether or not they're going to use the outfit and whatnot, but in LA, it's just like, 'OK, and change! And strip!' And you're just like 'What?' I was so thrown off at first because I was like, 'Is there somewhere I'm supposed to go?' and the lady looked at me like I was crazy, and I was like, 'Oh! Or not, I can change here, that's cool too.'"
- On the show's messages for young women: "There's a lot that Megan teaches Rose and Sage throughout the season that can apply to young girls everywhere — it's not just the rich and glamorous that can learn from each episode, it's the average girl, and I think that's awesome. I think they deal with some topics that maybe some girls don't want to discuss with their parents, and it's great, because then you get to watch Megan and the twins kind of go through it all. I think that's really good for young teens who are looking for any kind of guidance and maybe don't know where to go for it."

News Update: Is Rose Ready to Bloom and Go Solo?
Is Rose Ready to Bloom and Go Solo?
As the charming CW comedy Privileged (Tuesdays at 9 pm/ET) unspools its final freshman-season episodes, Rose will find herself ready to make a change — one that could forever alter her relationship with twin sis Sage. Lucy Kate Hale teased the twists and turns ahead, as well as weighed in on the "mean people" who booed NBC's Bionic Woman, to whom she played sis. -- Matt Mitovich
TVGuide.com: What's your favorite thing about Rose? And what would you change about her?
Lucy Kate Hale: My favorite thing about her is she's genuine and vulnerable. She wears her heart on her sleeve. The one thing I'd change is that she becomes more independent and creates more of an identity for herself.
TVGuide.com: I have that exact teaser here on my desk: "Rose makes a move to become more independent in the last two episodes [airing Feb. 10 and March 10]."
Hale: Yeah, and it's a big change. It's sad for fans of the twins and how they're always together, but we are going to learn they are two different people and don't always have to be together.
TVGuide.com: What sort of move does Rose make? Does she shack up with boyfriend Zach, dye her hair blonde ...?
Hale: She doesn't move in with Zach, not yet. Zach is around to stay, and if there's a Season 2 — knock on wood — he'll be there. But it's a pretty big move, literally. In the second-to-last episode, all these surprises and secrets that were kept from Rose are thrown at her, and that leads her to make big choices.
TVGuide.com: Are you glad that Zach isn't the traditional stud/arm candy?
Hale: I am so glad, because the first boyfriend that Rose had was not very nice to her. Zach totally would be my type in real life —sweet, smart, funny and quirky. It's good for the audience to see that Rose will go for the underdog.
TVGuide.com: Please, please, please tell me that Ashley Newbrough isn't nearly as nasty as Sage is.
Hale: She definitely isn't — and I know that because I'm moving in with her! We're getting an apartment together. She's literally one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life. I've been told that the sweetest people play the best bitches.
TVGuide.com: Does she ever get in a funk playing the meanie?
Hale: Yeah, because she doesn't want people to dislike her. You know how Leighton Meester is a bitchy character [on Gossip Girl], but you love her? It's the same way with Sage. Plus, they've been showing more of why Sage is the way she is, that she's damaged and puts up a guard.
TVGuide.com: Are you as sweet on JoAnna Garcia as I am?
Hale: I adore her. She's been so great to Ashley and I. She was on Reba for like seven years, and she's given us tips and pointers ....
TVGuide.com: Is she like a big sis, or are you all-out gal pals?
Hale: Both. We can hang out with her and have a good time, but there is that big sister quality. She's so honest and has a way of saying things.
TVGuide.com: If we can talk about Bionic Woman for a bit... . Was it hard seeing that show get dissected and critically slammed last TV season?
Hale: It was such a bummer. It was my first show, and for that to be my first experience ... was hard. I mostly felt bad for Michelle [Ryan], who worked her ass off every single day [as the series lead]. People were so mean about it. It just wasn't meant to work out, I guess.
TVGuide.com: Did we ever get a story on why Jaime Summers' kid sister [played in the original pilot by Mae Whitman, then recast with Hale] ceased being deaf?
Hale: All I heard was that they wanted to go a different way with the character. Mae Whitman was incredible, and I don't know why they made that choice. I didn't ask any questions. I just went in and did what they asked!
TVGuide.com: Tell me about the horror movie you have coming out this year, Deep Cove. It looks like a real CW "all-star team" effort.
Hale: Deep Cove should be interesting, for sure. It's an independent horror film I did after we shot the pilot for Privileged. Haylie Duff (7th Heaven) is in it, and Aaron Ashmore (Smallville)....
TVGuide.com: Any chance you will resurface on How I Met Your Mother as Robin's sister?
Hale: You know what? I'm really going for it, because outside of Privileged, that was the most favorite thing I've ever done. Keep your fingers crossed, because I sure am!

Privileged Schedule News
The Privileged season finale is being moved up to February 24th to accommodate the earlier start date for Reaper. There won’t be fewer new episodes of Privileged as a result, just fewer repeat airings.
Good News: For REAPER fans, who will get to see their favorite series return on March 3 -
two weeks earlier than originally planned. Bad News: For PRIVILEGED fans, whose season (or is it series?)
will wrap up earlier then originally planned, possibly indicating the CW’s lack of long term confidence in the series
